Complete Emergency Response Training FACT SHEET

WHAT IS CERT?
CERT (Complete Emergency Response Training) is the term we use for top-of-the-line emergency care training for corporations and industry. The concept behind CERT is to form a dedicated group to respond to problems within a facility or company. CERT members take a one-day (8 hours) or two-day (2 4-hours) program that teaches the most up to date first aid and resuscitation techniques and how to use the most high tech emergency equipment.

WHAT WILL CERT MEMBERS LEARN?
CERT members will learn valuable life-saving information and skills after completing the Essentials in Emergency Care class, or any other classes to suit their needs from the American Safety & Health Institute. In the class, CERT members will learn:

CPR Training: CERT participant will learn CPR techniques for either Adults and/or Children/Infants
Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Training: Extended CERT training can include the use of an automated external defibrillator. For unconscious adults or children, the application of electrical therapy (defibrillation) is a vital intervention that is only likely to work in the first five minutes of the emergency. CERT members will learn how to apply and use one of these machines.
Basic First Aid: Designed to teach CERT members how to recognize an emergency, how to care for bleeding wounds, muscle/bone injuries, burns, environmental emergencies, and sudden illness (seizures, poisoning, etc.)
Bloodborne Pathogen Training: Designed to train employee regarding safe workplace practices, to report follow up on employee exposure to infectious materials, and to reduce the number of employees who contact bloodborne infections. Due to time and material constraints, this is an awareness portion only.
Oxygen Administration: Serious and life-threatening medical emergencies often cause oxygen to be depleted in the body, leaving the victim at risk for cardiac arrest or brain damage. Supplemental oxygen is a critical step in treating a severe or life-threatening illness or injury. This program focuses on administering emergency oxygen, rescue breathing and oxygen devices. Due to time and material constraints, this is an awareness portion only.

HOW DOES CERT DIFFER FROM OTHER PROGRAMS:
CERT training isn't really any different than regular CPR/First Aid training - in fact, CERT program participants receive the same nationally recognized training certificates that we give out for our more traditional CPR/First Aid programs. The difference is that CERT integrates the site's specific equipment (their brand of AED or oxygen bottle for example) and supplies into the course. More than teach people how to perform CPR or First Aid, it teaches people to respond to emergencies - addressing issues like deployment, continuing education, and documentation. Your participants will not just learn to bandage a patient, they will learn to attend to the injury, document it properly, and provide a solid hand-off report to the responding ambulance. CERT also specifically integrates the site's specific equipment into all the skills (very important!). Participants will learn rescue breathing with oxygen if that is available, will work out of the specific CERT bags that the site has purchased, etc. A dedicated response team requires certain tools to be effective. You cannot have a CERT team working out of the same first aid kits that workers use to treat paper cuts. A CERT team is most effective when equipped with appropriate response gear.

LAWS & REGULATIONS
The combination of CERT programs covers some important regulatory requirements for certain industries.
For example:

Adult CPR & Basic First Aid	Complies with CFR 1910.151 - the 'First Aid' standard
Oxygen Therapy (Full Course)	Emergency oxygen use by non-clinicians requires training as per FDA> Chapter 24 "Devices - Emergency Oxygen"
Bloodborne Pathogens (Full Course)	Complies with CFR 1910.1030 - the 'Bloodborne Pathogens' standard
Automated External Defibrillation	Most states require some nationally accredited training program for the use of an automated external defibrillator.

WHO WOULD USE CERT TRAINING:
CERTs can be used in almost any industrial and/or corporate setting. The project has several benefits, including:

Regulatory Compliance for the above OSHA regulations
Reducing the potential for liability during an on-site emergency
Affirming the company's concern for the safety and health of employees
Potential increases in morale and safety awareness
The possibility of positively affecting the outcome of an employee who suddenly becomes sick and/or injured

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO START A CERT TEAM? A CERT is very easy to set up! The typical process includes:

Planning - Deciding how your CERT will be deployed during an emergency, how much training it will require, and what equipment it will have.
Recruiting - Finding volunteers/responders in your staff who will become CERT members
Purchasing - Acquiring the proper supplies and equipment for your CERT
Training - Providing your team with the proper skills to provide life-saving care to coworker

WHAT DOES IT COST TO START A CERT TEAM?
A typical CERT project is relatively inexpensive to implement. The standard CERT training is around $65.00 per participant. This includes training in Adult CPR, Basic First Aid, Oxygen Therapy, and Bloodborne Pathogens.

Other expenses might include various first aid supplies, an emergency oxygen kit, and an Automated External Defibrillator. A NESS Consultant is always available to assist you in creating a package to suit your needs.

IS THERE ANY RETRAINING INVOLVED?
The most basic retraining for a CERT, which includes all of the skills learned in the Essentials class, occurs after 2 years. We always stress however that CERT information & skills should be continually practiced and review. The average occupational response team will not see enough emergencies (hopefully) to be fluent with their skills unless they are challenged periodically with drills, exercises, and lectures. We highly recommend one of the two options to our current CERT members.

OPTION A - Meet every month for 30-45 minutes to review emergency topics such as, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, bleeding & shock, and medical emergencies. The cost for this is $120.00 per month.

OPTION B - Meet quarterly so CERT members can practice with hands-on skills by having a mock emergency drill. The cost for this is $150.00 per quarter.

Companies with existing Emergency Response Teams
A NESS consultant will review all aspects of your current operation. This is done by a review of operating procedures, schedules, employee certification levels and observation of your normal daily operation. Our consultant will provide you with a verbal and written report outlining the results. Emphasis is placed on required equipment, staffing, mandatory regulations and how they affect your company. If there is any policy or procedure that needs to be updated our consultant can assist you with this as well. Our consultant will also offer any needed training to you at a very competitive rate. As part of our consultation services your company may want to have a yearly contracted consultation and inspection.

Companies without Emergency Response Teams
If your company does not currently have an Emergency Response Team and would like information on how to establish one, NESS can help. We will review mandatory regulations affecting your company, assess your objectives, offer needed training, assist in the development of operational guidelines, and establish an estimated monetary start up figure. Remember that the number one reason to establish a CERT is to protect the well being of your employees and visitors.

Restaurant Emergency Response Training

Imagine this...
It's Friday night; every seat in your place is taken in the restaurant.
Happy customers are enjoying the atmosphere and fabulous food.
Suddenly you hear a woman screaming; "Help him, help him, he's not breathing!"
You run to the table. A man is clutching his throat, desperately trying to breath, but can't. You ask: ''What happened?" With panic in her eyes she blurts out that he was talking and chewing at the same time. The man is choking and slowly loosing consciousness because he's not breathing.

Would you know what to do? Would you need to ask "What happened?" or would you be able to identify and respond to the situation?

Choking claims over 3,000 lives each year.
Choking is a really common breathing emergency.
Choking is a preventable emergency.
A choking emergency occurs when food or an object block a person's airway, the passage that transports oxygen rich air to the lungs. If breathing is not restored by removing the food/object within minutes, a person can die.

Choking can affect anyone, regardless of age.
Everything (marbles, pennies, crayons pieces, etc.) ends up in their mouths of crawling infants and can easily block their tiny airways. Alcohol consumption can interfere with swallowing. Denture-wearers may have a hard time sensing whether food is completely chewed before swallowing. As you can see a choking emergency can happen to anyone, anytime.
